A special message from H. Britt Landrum, Jr

I hope all of you will have a blessed and happy 4th of July holiday. This year I have had the occasion to re-read portions of the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution, and I have been reminded just how brave and wise the founding fathers of our country were, and that they relied on divine guidance in their profound undertaking. I think it’s important that we never forget the wisdom displayed, and personal sacrifices made by those involved in that great event.
As a reminder, in the second meeting of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, on July 4, 1776, representatives of the thirteen colonies came together to declare that they were fed up with the way their (our) new country was being treated by the King of Great Britain, and so they declared, “that these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States.” In taking this action the fifty-six men at that assembly pledged to each other their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. In essence it was a declaration of war. They knew they would have to fight and some would die over that decision. Of course we know that our freedom was won at great cost to human life.
That’s what we will be celebrating as we make a toast or blast a firecracker or two. Let’s always remember.
